Antibiotics were one of humanity’s greatest scientific victories — and one of our most fragile. As resistance grows and drug pipelines dry up, researchers are racing to rediscover what once came naturally: the microbial creativity of the Earth itself. Most antibiotics originated in soil organisms, where bacteria and fungi evolved chemical defenses to compete for survival.
